Plans for milestone 0.8 and later

Here's a list of planned features for SuperTuxKart version 0.8 and beyond (0.8.1, 0.8.2). This may not be a complete list (it's based on the milestones page), and plans might change later on, but these are some of the main goals:
  • Improve physics (skidding, pushing other karts aside)
  • Career mode and/or different difficulties for challenges
  • Eye candy (light effects, light maps, normal maps)
  • Game replay
  • Ghost races
  • Reverse tracks
  • Online highscore lists

Only some of this will be ready for 0.8, while others will come in subsequent "minor" releases. Also, a release might be done even if not all the features are met, while other times features might come in earlier than anticipated. So these are the main goals, but they are not 100% set in stone: other things might be added, or some of this might get postponed.

Some of this are already in the works. Improved physics is the most important feature for 0.8, and hiker has already started on it. Meanwhile, Auria has added normal map support, so for track makers this is a feature to consider.

We do not know when we will be ready for a release, but as a rough, unfounded guesstimate, maybe we'll see the 0.8 release 6-12 months from now on, give or take a few decades. ;)

What we do know, is that we'd love to see more people join in on this project in any area they are interested in. So if you want to help out with your skills, please get in touch and we'll try to get you started. :)

  1. I'm just gonna put out there that this game is going to be Awesome. You're doing a great job!

  2. LOL. I'm not impressed by those possible changes unless there is online multiplayer support :-

  3. Hola, me parecen buenos los cambios, pero creo como "archl" que la prioridad es multijugador online. Con eso podríamos armar campeonatos y hacer crecer la comunidad....

  4. The reason for multiplayer to be delayed is because multiplayer cannot be reasonably implemented until the physics are final; therefore it is important to finalize the physics first. This is why 0.8 will concentrate on physics

  5. Yummy!! ;)

While I do agree that a multiplayer version should just be discussed after the 0.8 release (physic fixes and online highscores), I think some of the new features could be postponed (unless alredy started) as Arthur wrote. I'm thinking about these 3:

    - Game replay
    - Ghost races
    - Reverse tracks

Surely they are important but IMHO I wouldn't stuck with these for the 0.8.x release. And still your other goals will keep you busy for a while :)

    Anyway have fun guys!! ;)

  6. Francesco, indeed the one important goal for 0.8 is the physics, everything else might be delayed

  9. it's great game
    i love it very much
    i have question:
is there any possibility to play it on-line?
    Thank you

  10. Real great! What about making a "new" old version. All the old karts and tracks with the old interface, but the new karts and tracks as well.

  11. Nick, the add-ons system can allow getting old tracks and karts to the extent that some people want to port them. I see no interest in bringing back the old interface however.

  15. Please add an "Advanced Options" tab that allows you to selectively turn off certain features.

I really want the ability to turn off/disable the rubber ball and parachutes - weapons that require no skill to use and ruin any chances of setting records.

  16. mr_a500, time trial mode should be what you want for a mode where only skills matter

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, time trial is good... but I also like to race using weapons (time trial can get a bit dull) - as long as the weapons require skill to use. Otherwise, the game is just random.

  18. I have a few more suggestions (though I know you're probably sick of suggestions):

    1. After a race, there should be a quick way of seeing the records, maybe with a button "see high scores" - instead of escaping out and starting a new race to see them.

    2. Mouse selection of items is "too loose" - meaning you can too easily select things by accident. Example: many times I wanted to select "Restart Race", but got "Set up new race" when I wasn't even near it. I've selected the wrong track many times too. You should have to have the mouse pointer at least close to the icon to select it.

  19. Here's an example of loose selection - see where the mouse pointer is and what is actually selected:

If I click, I'll be getting "Normal Race" even though I'm only a couple pixels away from the "Time Trial" icon.

  20. yeah we're aware of the mouse issues, unforunately this is a limitation of the toolkit we are using, there is no easy way around that

regarding highscores, maybe, we're just a bit out of screen space

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well the three buttons take up more than half the width of the screen, so I'd say you have plenty of space. You could do 2x2.

  22. I'd like to suggest you something: give player the possibility of customizing the champioship mode. For instance, adding the complement tracks to the championship or creating mini-championships with the tracks that player choose, mixing standar tracks with complement tracks.

  23. I discovered (while poking around in the data files) that the Grand Prix championships are simple text files (located in data/grandprix). You can edit them or create new .grandprix files to create your own championships. (the game is wonderfully programmed that you are able to do that!)

I agree though that it would be nice if you could do it in the game instead.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Still no networking multiplayer games? Damn!

  32. Johann: va dans les options, tu peux tout configurer là...
