Announcing SuperTuxKart Evolution

A new major game version bringing a fresh experience with heaps of new content and plenty of improvements : that’s what many STK players have been waiting for, and it’s what the SuperTuxKart Evolution project aims to bring about.

The STK team has a vision for this next great step in SuperTuxKart’s journey, and we are committed to bring it to life, honoring the legacy of those whose work allowed SuperTuxKart to become an icon of open-source and Linux gaming.

The SuperTuxKart Evolution project is led by Sven, our lead artist, and by myself, Alayan, our lead game designer.

We have already thought and worked on many of those changes, and a roadmap detailing our plans will be made available in an upcoming update alongside further details.

What about 1.5?

UPDATE 02/09/25: We are happy to announce that over the last few days, we managed to get some misunderstandings cleared and to find common ground with Benau, who became co-leader of STK in 2019. The sections below have been amended to reflect this. A further announcement will follow.

If you have been following the project in recent times, you may be wondering when the promised 1.5 version is coming. The release candidate came out almost 3 months ago.

The code was pretty much ready, but misunderstandings hampered communication and trust, preventing the team from agreeing on a release timeline and freezing progress.

UPDATE 02/09/25: Despite some differences in vision, both sides want SuperTuxKart to go on. As a result of the agreement we reached, much of previous concerns over project resources are not relevant anymore. There will still be a few changes, but on the basis of technical merit.

As indicated in the previous version of this announcement, we aim to release 1.5 soon, but it is now planned to be a joint release with the cooperation of Benau and Devee, as we had long hoped for.

Closing words

This announcement is bittersweet, as the promise of a renewed development effort is mixed with news of trouble within the team. Thankfully, wisdom and understanding appear set to prevail.

SuperTuxKart Evolution is an ambitious project, but we already have demonstrated our capabilities with our past contributions, and we intend to prove our seriousness through hard work, regular updates on the game’s development, and ultimately a great release.

We also wish to renew communication with and between people who enjoy SuperTuxKart. We plan on opening a new forum very soon for this purpose.

If you have further questions, you can direct them in the comments below.

  1. Thank you for this information explaining the delay in the release of version 1.5 (and therefore next other versions as well). In any case, thank you so much for all your work; my colleagues and I love STK and play it regularly (and we organize a tournament among ourselves during our annual seminar). I hope that this storm you are facing will indeed make you stronger than ever.

  4. So, is the new version after 1.5 going to be named SuperTuxKart Evolution in the game or is that just a nickname.

    1. SuperTuxKart Evolution will be the official name of the next major release, that will bring new tracks, gameplay changes, etc.

    2. Will it be named that way for all the versions ahead. Also, is it going to be version 2.0 or will it start a new version number.

  8. This was heartwarming and unbelievable to read, especially the part where Benau went rogue. Although, this was a real major step up and I guess that explains the ERR-CONNECTION REFUSED from the old website. I hope you shall overcome your weaknesses into a strength that will make you soar higher.

    1. I don't like the pixeled words, but the white is okay but the logo is WAY too small.

  10. Will the game use the same engine as before or something like Godot?

  11. Hi, can i enter some ideas to improve soccer?
    1. Replay: Would be great to have the possibility to replay, when you want, for example to see goals again. It should be possible to turn it on and off manually in the settings or manually activate it during game. At least for offline games, it could get really cool, e.g. to see your goal again. For online it would be definitely cool too, but i don't really know how to get that to online, esp if some players like to replay and others not.
    2. Referee/VAR: One or more players will be chosen es referees. For example after a goal happened, the referee can decide if that counts as a goal or not. It should be voted by players before the game started. I decided to write it, because sometimes it happens that a clear goal doesnt count by game or a goal counts when the ball clearly wasn't completely over the line. However, i have also another idea for some changes (see poin), where referee would be even more important.
    3. More realistic soccer mode: For that, a referee is clearly needable. A court where ball can go out would be great too. So, imagine, you're right in front of the goal. A player of the opponent team hits you with a cake and that's the reason why you can't score the goal. Then, usually the game just continiues and nothing happens. In that mode, the referee could decide to give you for example a penalty. Another change should be, if there's an "open" court without borders, you can take a corner. That version of soccer should be seperate from the "normal" one, so you can choose, which mode to take.

That are just a few ideas. I don't really know if they would make too much sense, bit let me know what you think about it or if you have another idea.
